SSI basics

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a needs-based program with rules that differ from retirement or disability benefits based on a work record.

How to use this guide: Read the plain-language explanation, make a short list of questions and then open a local office page if your task needs an in-person visit. This page does not determine eligibility or process a request.

Separate SSI from Social Security

SSI eligibility is based on income and resources as well as disability, blindness or age rules. Social Security benefits generally use a person’s work record. A person may qualify for one program, both or neither depending on the facts.

Do not rely on a generic income or resource number from an old article. Use current SSA instructions for the year and your circumstances.

Report changes promptly

Changes in living arrangements, income, resources or household circumstances may matter. Use the official reporting instructions and keep proof of what you reported.

If you receive a notice, read the deadline carefully. Keep the notice and any confirmation together so you can explain what happened if you need help.

  • Income or employment changes.
  • Living arrangement or address changes.
  • Changes in resources or household support.

Ask for help with your case

If the rules are difficult to apply to your circumstances, contact SSA through an official channel. This directory cannot determine eligibility, calculate payments or replace a caseworker.

Bring the notice and relevant records if SSA directs you to an office. Do not give sensitive information to a third-party directory.
